For Chandler High School senior Landon Massie, success begins long before Friday night lights or a wrestling match. It is built through daily effort, consistency and the willingness to improve one day at a time.
Massie is a two-sport athlete for the Lions, competing in football and wrestling while also taking on a full schedule of academic and leadership commitments. On the football field, he contributes in the trenches as a defensive end and offensive tackle, positions that demand toughness, discipline and a team-first mindset.
His approach is simple, but it is one he carries into every workout, practice, class and competition.
“I’m motivated to improve myself every day,” Massie said.
That pursuit of improvement has been shaped by people who challenged him to raise his standards. One of Massie’s most meaningful influences is Fred Perry, a former coach who helped him understand that results are earned through the work put in when no one is watching.
“My biggest influence would probably be Fred Perry, an old coach of mine,” Massie said. “He taught me that hard work and staying consistent will create success.”
Massie has seen that lesson play out during his athletic career. He believes the formula for becoming successful is not complicated, but it requires athletes to stay committed over time.
“Being consistent and working hard every day,” Massie said of what it has taken to succeed.
One of the defining moments of Massie’s career came last season when Chandler delivered an emphatic win over Clinton. Entering the matchup as a 30-point underdog, the Lions responded with one of their biggest victories of the year, defeating Clinton by 30 points.
For Massie, rivalry games carry a different kind of energy. He said beating Stroud stands out because of the history between the two schools.
“Stroud is the opponent I enjoyed beating the most because that is our school’s rival,” Massie said.
In practice, Massie appreciates the competition provided by teammate Roanon Wolford. Going against someone who pushes him has helped Massie continue developing in the demanding roles he plays up front.
“I enjoy working against him in practice because he always gives me good competition,” Massie said.
Massie also makes sure his impact reaches beyond athletics. He is active in National Honor Society, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Positive Peers, Student Council and the BancFirst Student Board. Balancing those responsibilities requires the same commitment he brings to sports.
“Just always working to the best of my abilities,” Massie said.
When Massie takes the field wearing Chandler colors, he knows he represents more than himself.
“To play a respectable game and always go 100% no matter how tired I am,” Massie said.
