Cushing’s Noel Jeanne Bussel – Cheerleader Spotlight

Noel Jeanne Bussell has built a busy junior year at Cushing High School around a commitment to cheer, demanding academics and meaningful involvement across campus.

Bussell studies health careers at Central Tech in Drumright while also taking concurrent courses through Rogers State University. Although her schedule leaves little idle time, she has found a strong interest in learning how the body functions.

“My favorite class this year is Anatomy and Physiology because I love learning how the muscles and bones work together,” Bussell said.

That interest complements the work she puts into cheerleading. Bussell fills several roles for her squad, serving as a base while also contributing tumbling and jumping skills. She occasionally helps choreograph routines, adding another layer of responsibility to her role.

“I am fortunate to have many roles on our squad; I base, tumble, and jump… and occasionally help choreograph,” Bussell said.

Her preparation extends well beyond the school calendar. The squad practices during the summer, while Bussell also takes tumbling lessons from BJ Nelson and works on skills at home. The work can even spill into the family’s front yard, where cheerleaders can often be found practicing stunts.

“Our squad practices together all summer long. On my own, I take tumbling lessons from BJ Nelson (shout out to my favorite tumbling coach ever) and practice at home. It’s not uncommon to see cheerleaders stunting away in our front yard. Basically, even in the summer, cheer doesn’t stop and I love it that way,” Bussell said.

For Bussell, one of cheer’s greatest benefits is the connection it creates among teammates.

“Having built-in friends with similar passions,” Bussell said.

She credits teammates, past and present, with helping shape her experience. A former teammate, Juliana, eased Bussell’s transition into varsity cheer during her freshman year. Bussell also values the relationship she has developed with Brylen, her main base in stunts.

“Brylen (my main base) because of the way she pushes me to be better and our stunt group to excel. I love our accountability and knowing I have another strong, reliable base,” Bussell said.

Bussell said athletics has helped her develop habits that will carry into future challenges. The lessons have centered on accepting instruction, embracing difficult situations and responding constructively when things do not go as planned.

“Being coachable and open to feedback is the key to success. Getting uncomfortable and trying new things can be scary but it helps you become a better version of yourself. Failure is a necessary part of the journey, but you have to be willing to learn from it and come back better. Don’t quit on something you love,” Bussell said.

Outside of cheer and academics, Bussell participates in Business Professionals of America, National Honor Society, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Student Council and Tomorrow’s Leaders. She still makes room for family, particularly her sister and younger cousins, as well as time with friends.

The person who continues to motivate Bussell most is her mother.

“My mom inspires me. She is the most hardworking person I know and never gives up. Plus, she is thoughtful and caring; even if my mom is having a bad day, she puts it aside to go above and beyond to make my day better. My mom is an excellent role model and inspires me each day to work hard and be kind.”
