For Cushing High School junior Taylor McKiddy, softball is more than a sport. It is a source of motivation, a place to build relationships and an opportunity to represent a community that has supported her throughout her athletic journey.
McKiddy competes in softball and track, playing first base for the softball team. This season has presented a new challenge as she works her way back after surgery, but the time away has strengthened her appreciation for the game.
“What motivates me is coming back from an injury and getting back to doing what I love. Being away from softball made me appreciate the game even more, and it motivated me to work hard and stay positive. I’m excited to keep improving and get back on the field with my team.”
Her athletic path has been shaped by long practices, games and tournaments. McKiddy believes persistence and a positive mindset will help her overcome the difficulties of returning to competition.
“It has taken many hours and long days of practices, games, and tournaments to have become successful for me in my sports. This year especially has been challenging coming back from surgery. It has come with its challenges but with extra work and mindset I will overcome it.”
McKiddy’s accomplishments include winning a state championship with her Oak Grove team as a seventh grader. She was also named All-District first baseman during her high school career last season.
While she does not identify one particular opponent she wants to defeat, McKiddy enjoys the challenge of a close contest and the resilience required to turn it around.
“I wouldn’t say I have a specific team I enjoy beating. I love a good come back.”
She also values tough individual matchups, including competing against Ava Hebensperger, whom she considers a strong hitter. McKiddy said those battles encourage her to raise her own expectations.
Beyond athletics, McKiddy participates in Student Council and National Honor Society. She previously participated in agricultural education and showed pigs. Managing schoolwork alongside practices and competition requires planning, so she uses time on bus rides and after Wednesday practices to complete assignments.
McKiddy credits teammates, former coaches, Coach V and her parents for influencing her growth. She also recognizes varsity pitcher Veda for carrying a demanding role for the team.
After high school, McKiddy plans to continue her education through Health Careers at Central Tech, then attend college to earn a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree. Her goal is to work in a children’s hospital oncology department, with hopes of someday working at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Her commitment to softball, academics and service reflects the pride she feels representing Cushing.
