Davenport High School senior Gabby Murfin leads by example on the softball field, setting the tone with both her performance and her mindset.
Murfin, a pitcher entering her 12th-grade year, understands the responsibility that comes with her position. “If you get down, so does the rest of the team,” she said, emphasizing the mental toughness required on the mound.
Her leadership approach is simple but effective. “Lead by example on and off the field with positive actions and words,” Murfin said. That attitude has helped her build strong relationships with teammates and coaches, which she describes as one of the most rewarding aspects of the sport. “The bond we have” is what she loves most about being part of the team.
Murfin credits her mother as her biggest inspiration. “She’s hardworking and independent,” Murfin said, qualities she strives to reflect in her own life. Those values carry into both academics and athletics, where she lists history with Mrs. Moore as her favorite class.
On the field, Murfin focuses on keeping things simple at the plate. “Stay focused and put the ball in play,” she said. That same focus helps her navigate the emotional highs and lows of competition. “Frustration leads to disappointment,” Murfin said, noting one of the most important lessons she has learned through athletics.
Team chemistry plays a major role in Davenport’s success. Murfin highlighted her teammates’ personalities, pointing out Charlie as the most vocal and Autumn as the one who “keeps everyone laughing.” She also joked about team superlatives, naming herself as the player most likely to end a game with the dirtiest uniform.
Off the field, Murfin enjoys spending time bedazzling random items, a creative outlet that contrasts with the intensity of competition.
As she prepares for her final season, Murfin remains focused on continuing to support her teammates and represent her program with positivity. Whether in the circle or at the plate, her steady presence and commitment to her team set her apart as a leader.
