Changing schools is never easy, but Bristow High School’s Xavier McDonald has found stability in the things that have always mattered most to him: football, faith and the people who have stood beside him through every step of the journey.
McDonald, now a junior, is settling into life at Bristow and embracing every opportunity that comes with a fresh start. While he’s still getting to know the community, he already knows the mindset he’ll bring to the field every day.
“Football taught me to keep fighting,” McDonald said. “There’s going to be adversity in everything you do. It’s not always going to go your way.”
It’s a lesson that extends well beyond Friday nights. Whether he’s learning a new system, facing challenges at school or dealing with everyday life, McDonald believes the only option is to keep moving forward instead of letting setbacks define him.
When asked what he’s most proud of, McDonald didn’t mention touchdowns, awards or statistics. His answer came without hesitation.
“My family,” he said. “They’re always here to support me and walk me through everything. I wouldn’t be where I’m at today without them.”
McDonald is also thankful for the coaches who have invested in him throughout his football career. He said they believed in him, held him accountable and helped him grow both on the field and in the classroom.
“I wouldn’t be the player I am today if it wasn’t for them,” he said.
At Bristow, teammate Javon Freeman has already become someone McDonald leans on. Whether it’s studying the playbook or asking questions during practice, Freeman has always been willing to help.
“If I don’t know what to do, he’s there to help me,” McDonald said.
Outside of football, McDonald admits he’s still getting to know his new hometown, but he enjoys that there’s always something to do nearby. One of his favorite ways to spend time is meeting friends at the tennis courts for a game of pickleball.
The best advice McDonald has ever received is to keep going no matter what happens. He said everyone gets knocked down at some point, but it’s your choice whether you move forward or stay stuck in the past.
Above everything else, McDonald gives the credit to God for leading him through every opportunity and challenge. He also remains thankful for his family and friends, whose constant encouragement has helped him become the person he is today. As he continues writing his story at Bristow, those are the people he’ll carry with him every time he steps onto the field.
