For Chandler senior Shailey Penn, wrestling is about more than just winning—it’s about growth, grit, and legacy. “I push myself to be better every day to win a state title,” she said. That drive has carried Penn to remarkable achievements already, including Supergirl 64 All-American honors, a 4th-place finish at regionals, and 3rd at the state tournament.
Standing 5’9” and competing around 125 or 130 pounds, Penn is one of the key leaders for the Lions’ wrestling program. “The number of leaders we have across the boys and girls team encouraging everyone to become better wrestlers,” she said, is what she sees as their biggest strength. That unity is a major reason she believes the program continues to grow. “The girls’ team has exponentially expanded,” Penn noted.
Penn’s approach to competition is straightforward and fearless. “I don’t really worry much about my opponent. I just go out and wrestle to the best of my ability,” she said. Before every match, she sticks to a steady routine: “I trust in my training and make sure to warm up physically and mentally before each match. Then I say a prayer and hope for the best.” Once the whistle blows, her mindset sharpens. “Score points, be aggressive, and wrestle clean,” she said.
When it comes to team goals, Penn says they’re aiming high. “Our goal is to bring the entire team to the state tournament. We are working hard and pushing each other every day to get better.” That shared determination has built strong camaraderie. “Morale has been good—we are all excited to start the season,” she added.
Penn’s favorite memories come from moments with her teammates. “Going to state last year with all my best friends,” she said, still brings a smile. Outside of wrestling, she’s active in track, FFA, football management and photography, Bank First Student Board, and Rotary Club.
When asked how she hopes to be remembered at Chandler, Penn’s answer is simple: “To win the first girls wrestling title, and to be known as my teammates’ biggest supporter.”
