Bristow High School sophomore is an underclassman to watch on the court. She is a big part of the mostly young talent that makes up the Lady Pirates basketball team this year.
“Josie had a really good freshman year and we are expecting an even bigger year this year,” said head coach Matt Morgan. “Her ball-handling helps her get to the rim and she shoots the ball good from the three point line. She is also disruptive on the defensive end.”
The point guard says she grew up in a basketball family and has played since second grade.
“The game has always been a big part of my life,” said Josie. “My dad is a coach, so I practically grew up in the gym. Watching him coach and seeing my sister play really inspired me. From a young age, I knew I wanted to be out on the court too.”
Her father isn’t just her coach, he is someone she looks up to in all areas.
“My role model is my dad,” she said. “He has been my coach for most of my life, so he is the one who has shaped me into the player I am today.”
Morgan’s teammates are also influential in her life.
“My teammates mean everything to me,” she said. “They aren’t just the people I play with; they’re basically family. They encourage and hold me accountable every day, and I wouldn’t be the player I am today without them.”
There is one opponent in particular Morgan looks forward to playing this season – Cushing.
“They are our long-time rivals, so there’s always some extra energy when we play them,” she said. “It’s always a physical, competitive game.”
Outside of basketball, Morgan enjoys playing softball and being a part of FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes). When on the court, Morgan stays grounded.
“Just being able to play basketball motivates me,” she said. “I know not everyone gets the chance to do something they love, so every time I’m on the court, I try to make the most of it and remind myself how blessed I am.”
