Yale’s Lily Collins – Athlete Spotlight

Yale High School sophomore Lily Collins approaches each activity with an emphasis on effort, connection and growth. Whether she is supporting classmates as a cheer team back spot, playing second base for the softball team or competing in FFA public-speaking events, Collins values the lessons that come from being part of a group.

Collins’ father remains her greatest source of motivation.

“My Dad inspires me, even though he is no longer with us, I still push my self to make him proud.”

That motivation carries into the work she puts in before a school year begins. Collins estimates that she spends six to eight hours each week in workouts and practice, preparing for the demands of cheer season. As a backspot, her role requires focus, trust and an awareness of the entire stunt group.

She especially enjoys the opportunity to represent her school and create energy at events.

“I enjoy representing and supporting my school. When cheering, I have the most fun participating in dance routines.”

Athletics have also helped Collins develop skills that extend beyond the field, mat or sideline. She recognizes the importance of working with others toward a shared goal and taking responsibility within a team.

“I feel like I’ve learned a lot about team building and leadership.”

Collins draws inspiration from teammates who demonstrate resilience and positivity. Current teammate Teal stands out for the example she sets each day.

“I look up to my current teammate, Teal. She always has a great attitude, a big smile, and is the kindest person. She is so strong and pushes herself to be the best she can be.”

She also credits Cheyenne for leaving a lasting impression through perseverance.

“Probably Cheyenne, even when things are hard she still manages to push through with determination to succeed.”

Away from athletics, Collins enjoys spending time with friends and playing softball. Math is her favorite subject, while science teacher Mrs. Pummill has made a meaningful impact in the classroom.

“My favorite teacher is my science teacher, Mrs. Pummill. She’s a good teacher, and I feel like I learn a lot from her.”

Collins also treasures time at Crossroads Community Church, a place she has attended since before moving to Yale. Her involvement in church, athletics and FFA continues to shape a well-rounded high school experience grounded in teamwork, faith and determination.
