When Francella Jenkins started running cross country as a freshman, she just saw it as an opportunity to stay in shape for track. She has since developed a love for the sport. Now a sophomore at Mannford High School, Francella looks forward to this season.
“My favorite part of cross country is running halfway through the meet because I motivate myself to go faster to the finish line,” she said.
The sport has taught her to work hard and never give up. The following advice pushes her to the finish line.
“If you are tired, keep going because it’s all in your head.”
Support from teammates is a key motivator. Marley Breshears is a teammate who leaves a good impression on Francella.
“She is a really good runner and person. When I’m running, I always want to stay by her in practice and the meets, so I can push myself to be as good as her.”
Francella is passionate about her sport and enjoys the rewards of her hard work.
“I put in the dedication and effort into it at practice and at the meets,” says Francella. “My favorite memory was qualifying for state last year.”
Coach Furr is Francella’s favorite teacher. He was her track coach and also taught her favorite subject, history.
“I like knowing stuff that happened back in the day,” she says.
When representing her school as a student-athlete, she enjoys showing everyone where she is from.
“My favorite part is proudly wearing our school colors and representing my school and community,” she said.
Francella’s mom inspires her the most.
“She’s a hard worker and is always there for me. Thank you to everyone who has supported me my whole life. I couldn’t be more grateful,” she praised.
The best vacation Francella has ever taken was a cruise.
“I met really nice people there and became really good friends with them and it was a really fun experience.” Traveling and cooking are some of her favorite pastimes.
