Kellyville High School alumna Jymmi Hampton was happy to return to her former stomping grounds to coach cheer for the Ponies. She has been coaching there for six years, with four as the head coach. During her time at Kellyville High, Hampton played soccer, softball, basketball, was a mat maid, and did barrel racing.
“I love our small town,” said Hampton. “People know your name, we care about each other, neighbors look out for one another. If someone is in need, our village steps up to help. There’s a sense of peace and connection.”
Hampton credits assistant coach DeEdra Palmer for being big help for three years as well. With Palmer, Hampton gets a front row seat to her reason for loving the sport.
“I love coaching cheer, it builds teamwork, energy, and confidence,” she said. “Watching them grow, not just as athletes but as people, learning discipline, dedication, accountability, and responsibility.”
The team was led this year by senior captains Peyton Denny and Katelyn Palmer. Palmer was an All American Nominee along with Naya Haggard, Annie Slater, and Phoebe Rosson. Two sophomores who made NCA All-American Cheerleaders are ylina Canales and Baylee Vinyard – who coach Hampton regards as “a powerhouse that brings great skills and contribution to our team.”
The season’s highlights also include attending NCA camp and earning two spirit sticks, Top Team Cheer, and the Herkie Award for the team that demonstrated team spirit, unity, value, and leadership throughout the week. Kellyville also made it to state in the OSSAA Class 3A Competitive Cheer Competition.
In light of these achievements, Hampton says that this team, if described in one word, is resilient.
“No matter what obstacle or setback is thrown their way, they get back up, rise together, and never give up,” she said. “Every challenge, a chance to grow and a step toward improvement. They never stop, never quit, and never back down.”
