Drumright High School senior Garett Wright approaches his final year of athletics with a clear sense of purpose shaped by years of competition, teamwork and growth.
A quarterback for the varsity football team, Wright said the most challenging part of his position is “making sure I make the right read or not,” a responsibility that requires quick thinking under pressure. That pressure has given him perspective, teaching him that “everything in life is not easy,” a lesson he expects to carry beyond high school.
Wright credits much of his motivation to those around him, especially teammate Keaton Jensen. “He inspires me,” Wright said, pointing to Jensen’s work ethic and leadership on the baseball field. Another teammate, Cordae McCormick, has also left a lasting impression.
Wright said their friendship “built over the years” stands out as one of the most meaningful parts of his experience.
Off the field, Wright is a multisport athlete who values staying active and connected on campus. He also enjoys spending time with friends and playing video games when he has downtime. In the classroom, math is his favorite subject, and he named Mr. Ledgerwood as his favorite teacher.
Wright said team culture is what he appreciates most about high school athletics. “Knowing when it’s time for fun, or time to put in work” defines his team, he said. That balance helps create strong bonds and keeps players focused when it matters most.
To prepare mentally for games, Wright listens to music, a routine that helps him stay calm and focused before kickoff. While he has witnessed intense moments on the field — including seeing a quarterback suffer a shoulder injury — he said the memories that stick with him most are positive, like “winning the second grade championship.”
As Wright looks ahead, he said he will carry the lessons, friendships and discipline from his athletic career into the next chapter of his life.
