For Remi Powell, track isn’t just about speed; it’s about resilience. A junior at Cushing High School, she competes in the 4×800, 4×400, and high jump, bringing both versatility and determination to her team. But her story isn’t defined by times or marks alone, it’s shaped by what she’s had to overcome to get back on the track.
Her freshman year gave her a glimpse of what was possible.
“My freshman year I had the opportunity to go to state in the 4×800 relay.”
That moment set a standard. It showed her where hard work could take her. But the journey didn’t stay smooth. An injury last season forced her to step away from competition, something that tested her mentally as much as physically.
“Last year I was not able to run due to an injury… it really showed how much this sport had an impact on me.”
Being sidelined gave her a new perspective. It wasn’t just about competing, it was about connection, growth, and learning how to fight through challenges. Now, heading into this season, she carries a renewed sense of purpose.
“I am ready to come back this year and start strong.”
Remi’s motivation doesn’t come from within alone. Her dad has been a steady source of inspiration, setting the example through his own work ethic and support.
“My dad inspires me, he is always pushing me to be the best version of myself.”
She’s also been shaped by those around her, especially teammates like Cora, whose energy and drive left a lasting impression.
“She was always pushing and working to better herself and me too.”
Through it all, the support system at Cushing has remained a constant. From teammates to coaches, Remi knows she’s never had to face challenges alone, especially during her recovery.
“My Coach… helped me make the final decision to heal myself instead of furthering my injury.”
Now stepping into a leadership role, Remi is focused on giving back to her team, pushing others the same way she’s been pushed.
Her race is no longer just about finishing first, it’s about finishing strong, no matter what stands in her way.
