Cushing’s Kendall Kelley-Athlete Spotlight-Presented by Cushing Insurance Agency

Kendall Kelley knows distance running isn’t about instant results. Every practice, every mile and every race is another opportunity to improve, a mindset that has helped the Cushing High School junior qualify for the state meet in both cross country and track during each of her first two years of high school.

For Kelley, the biggest lessons from running extend well beyond the finish line. The sport has taught her to continually work toward becoming a better athlete, give her best effort and encourage her teammates to do the same.

“The best advice I’ve ever received is to work for what you want,” Kelley said. “If I don’t get a certain time or place, it just means I have to work harder next time.”

One of the people who has made the biggest impact on her journey is coach Kalie Rockwell, known as Coach V.

“Coach V is so funny and always pushes me to do my best,” Kelley said.

Kelley has also benefited from years of friendly competition with Harli York. The two have been racing each other since the sixth grade, and Kelley says having someone who consistently pushes her has made her a stronger runner.

“Harli has always been great competition for me,” Kelley said. “She always pushes me to work hard and try to beat her.”

Outside of cross country and track, Kelley stays involved in Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Tomorrow’s Leaders and the Cushing High School cheer program. Balancing multiple activities has allowed her to build friendships while staying connected to her school community.

When she’s not at practice or school, Kelley enjoys spending time at CC’s Cones & Cakes, where she likes the snow cones and funnel cakes. Her favorite hometown tradition is Cushing’s annual Color Run because it brings people together in a fun, relaxed atmosphere.

“They throw dye on you while you’re running,” Kelley said. “It’s super fun, and you can get your friends to run with you.”

As Kelley prepares for another cross country and track season, she remains focused on continuing to improve one race at a time. She is thankful for the encouragement she receives from her parents, friends, teachers and teammates, whose constant support has helped her pursue her goals while enjoying every step of the journey.
