Chandler High School sophomore Josiah Tillis is quickly making a name for himself as a dependable and driven varsity athlete, balancing both football and basketball while staying focused on growth on and off the field.
Tillis, a wide receiver, understands the demands of his position and the discipline it requires. “Just making sure you can open,” he said when asked about the toughest part of playing receiver, highlighting the constant need for awareness, speed and precision.
He credits his father as his biggest inspiration. “My dad, because I can always count on him,” Tillis said, pointing to a strong support system that fuels his work ethic. That mindset carries into his approach to athletics, where he says one of the biggest lessons he has learned is “to never give up.”
On the field, Tillis has already experienced moments he will not forget. One of the most shocking came during a game when he saw “a player punch a referee,” a reminder of how intense competition can become. Still, he prefers to focus on the positive, including his favorite memory: “beating our rivals.”
Team culture plays a major role in his experience. “I love that they always have my back,” Tillis said of his teammates, adding that spending time with them is one of the most enjoyable parts of being on the team. He also noted teammate Peyton as someone who has left a lasting impression because “he’s always been there.”
Off the field, Tillis enjoys working out, listening to music and staying active. At school, he names math as his favorite subject and Coach Blankenship as his favorite teacher. His favorite place on campus is the gym, where he continues to sharpen his skills.
Whether in competition or preparation, Tillis remains focused and motivated, representing Chandler with consistency and determination as he continues his athletic journey.
