Chandler’s Gentry Garner – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by Route 66 Bowl

Chandler High School’s Gentry Garner has built a reputation as a versatile, hardworking two-sport athlete who thrives wherever her teams need her most. She plays basketball and softball for the Lady Lions, handling guard duties on the hardwood and serving primarily as an outfielder and true utility option on the diamond.

“I consider myself a utility player because I can step in wherever my team needs me,” Garner said, noting that she bats right-handed but can also slap hit and bunt from the left side. That adaptability helped Chandler make a run all the way to the state finals, a journey she calls her proudest accomplishment. “It wasn’t just about winning games, it was about all the hard work, practices, and challenges we went through together to get there,” she said.

Softball, Garner said, has shaped her well beyond the scoreboard. “Softball has taught me that nothing is free and that you have to work hard for everything you earn,” she said. The sport reinforced discipline, perseverance and accountability, reminding her that her effort affects the entire team. “Because of softball, I’ve become more determined, hardworking and motivated, and those lessons have helped me grow into a better person both on and off the field.”

She credits people around her for that growth. Garner points to her parents as her biggest inspiration because of their work ethic and sacrifices, and she singles out former teammate Carson Jackson, a senior when she was a freshman, for her leadership and faith-filled encouragement. In the classroom, her favorite teacher, sophomore English teacher Mrs. Leatherwood, pushed her to reach her full potential and modeled the importance of kindness and confidence.

Garner also thanked Chandler coach Herring for consistently believing in her and teaching her lessons that carry off the field. She looks up to softball legend Jennie Finch for the way Finch pairs elite performance with strong Christian faith, a balance Garner hopes to reflect as she represents Chandler with pride every time she puts on the uniform.
