There is a lot of hard work that goes into an athlete being successful. Along with the physical work, you also have to be prepared mentally. Cali Hilgenfeld says that not giving up can be the most important thing to your success.
“Becoming successful in track has taken a lot of discipline, built through training,” she said. “You have to push through the challenges and keep moving forward.”
Cali is a senior at Chandler High School. As a member of the track team, she is the anchor for the 4×100 relay, 4×200 relay, and 4×400 relay, while also running the 100-meter dash. Hilgenfeld is also a member of the pom team, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Peer Mentors, Positive Peers, Gifted and Talented, Fish Club, Student Council, National Honor Society, and she is the senior class secretary.
Cali knows that hard work is vital to her success because she has seen it pay off.
“I would say the highlight moment of my career was securing the state runner-up in the 4×400 relay during my freshman year,” she said. “It fueled my passion for track.”
While the work has been important, Cali has also had an outstanding support system that has been there to help her and cheer her on.
“My parents and grandparents are my biggest role models because they always support me and believe in me,” she said. “Having their support has given me confidence to keep going even when things get hard. They’ve taught me about responsibility and kindness. I enjoy working out with my teammate Lexi. She is always positive, and having her by my side during workouts is uplifting.”
As a student in the classroom, Hilgenfeld has learned from many teachers. Out of all of them, she has one that stands out as her favorite.
“My sixth-grade teacher, Shelly Harris, has had a big impact on my life,” Cali said. “She has inspired me with her compassion and patience. She is now the librarian at my school and even though she’s in a different role, she still continues to encourage me and support me.”
