VYPE Athlete Feature: Bristow’s DeLaney Farris Leads with Heart, Spirit, and Purpose
By Olivia Jones
At Bristow High School, senior DeLaney Farris is setting the tone on the mat, on the court, and in the classroom. A standout on the varsity cheer and tennis teams, DeLaney brings more than just talent; she brings leadership, grit, and a deep love for her school and community.
As a back-spot and tumbler, DeLaney says her motivation comes from the people around her. “My team, my coaches, and the goals we set together push me to give 110% every time I hit the mat,” she said. “I also want to make my community proud and leave a legacy for the younger girls watching.”
Her role models include her mom and grandparents, who taught her the value of hard work and perseverance, along with her coaches. Among them, Mrs. Tammie, who also coaches cheer and tennis, has had a major influence. “She always believed in me—even when I doubted myself,” DeLaney said. “Her constant support and positivity have helped shape me into the person I am today.”
Success, she says, has come from dedication, trust, and mental strength. The cheer team lives by four core values: Selfless, Heart, Integrity, and Perseverance. “Those words aren’t just something we say—they’re in our DNA.”
One of DeLaney’s favorite moments was beating the reigning STUNT state champions in the semifinals during their first-ever STUNT season. “That was surreal and showed how far we’ve come.” The team has consistently competed at state, finishing as runner-up in both STUNT and Competition State this year, and they’re working hard to bring home the title.
She thrives in competition, especially alongside teammates like Ashlyn Turnbull, who keeps her accountable and focused. She also recognizes Abbie Brewer as one of the team’s most underrated players. “She never complains, always works hard, and I can count on her to be all in.”
Off the mat, DeLaney is heavily involved in leadership: NHS officer, cheer captain, and a member of both the Cheer and Athletic Leadership Councils, as well as Leo Club, TRIO, and Leadership class. Her favorite social media figure, Bryce Crawford, inspires her with faith-based content. “It reminds me to keep God at the center of everything.”
Her team’s pre-performance tradition? Prayer, followed by blasting “Unwritten” by Natasha Bedingfield—a symbol of fresh starts and new possibilities. Her favorite cheerleader is Gabi Butler, known for her passion and work ethic. And if she weren’t cheering? “I’d keep playing tennis. It’s such a fun sport and a great challenge.”
As she wraps up her senior year, DeLaney dreams of cheering for the University of Oklahoma, but regardless of where she goes next, one thing’s certain: her heart for leadership, her commitment to excellence, and her love for her community will always shine through.
