Cushing’s Lane Simpson-Athlete Spotlight-Presented by AFR Cushing Insurance Agency and Simpson Chiropractic

Lane Simpson does not see limits the way others might. Inspired by former NFL receiver T.Y. Hilton — once undersized and overlooked — Simpson has adopted a mindset built on persistence, confidence and quiet work.

Now entering his junior year at Cushing High School, Simpson is carving out his own path as a varsity receiver under Coach Rockwell. His approach is simple: put in the work and trust the results will follow.

“Athletics has taught me that hard work can get you anything in life,” Simpson said. “Keep your head down and work, and you can do anything you set your mind to.”

That mentality shows up in the way he prepares and competes. As a receiver, Simpson said one of the toughest challenges is facing physical, intelligent defenders at the line of scrimmage.

“The most difficult thing is getting pressed, especially by a smart defender,” he said.

Still, those challenges are part of what drives him. Simpson points to one of his favorite memories as proof of what preparation and belief can accomplish — a district-clinching win against Fort Gibson.

“My favorite memory was scoring the game-winning touchdown to win districts,” he said. “Then they tried throwing for a game winner, and we knocked it down.”

Beyond the highlights, Simpson values the relationships built through football just as much as the competition.

“The best thing is being around my brothers,” he said. “Everyone on the team is super close and hangs out a lot outside of football.”

He credits former teammate Roman Tucker as a major influence.

“He was the hardest-working kid in the room at all times, the best leader and the best friend you could have,” Simpson said.

That culture of accountability and effort extends throughout the program, something Simpson takes pride in.

“I love how hard we work and that we know what we’re capable of doing,” he said. “Nobody messes around in the weight room or on the field.”

Simpson’s routine also reflects his focus. Before each game, he joins his teammates in prayer — a moment he says centers him.

“It helps me calm down and know I’m not in it alone,” he said.

Off the field, Simpson stays active by golfing, working out with friends and holding a job with the city throughout the summer following participation in Summer Pride.

Whether it is on the football field or the golf course — his two favorite places — Simpson continues to build both his game and his character, one rep at a time.
