Making a run to the state semifinals during the 2025-26 football season is the accomplishment Hunter Joiner remembers most from his time at Cushing High School. For the senior, the playoff run represented the reward for months of hard work and reflected the competitive mindset he has developed through football, wrestling and golf.
That mindset centers on toughness.
“Sports have taught me a lot about mental toughness and physicality through losses and hardship,” Joiner said. “The winner of a game for me is decided by who is the most physical and who wants it more.”
The lessons he’s learned through athletics have carried over beyond competition. Joiner believes adversity is part of every challenge and meeting it head-on is what allows people to improve.
One educator who made a lasting impact was Ms. Eimen at Central Tech. Joiner said she built strong relationships with her students while teaching lessons about respect that extended well beyond the classroom.
Among his teammates, Justice Elliot has had one of the biggest influences. The two are frequently paired together during workouts, pushing each other to improve and making one another better through friendly competition.
Joiner also appreciates one aspect of Cushing that never changes: community support. He said the crowds that turn out for local sporting events bring energy that motivates athletes and creates an exciting atmosphere.
Some of the best advice he has received came before his first varsity football game. Offensive coordinator coach Scott Chisholm told him, “It’s okay to be nervous, but it’s not okay to be afraid.” Joiner said that reminder taught him fear can become an obstacle to success if it isn’t overcome.
Outside of athletics, Joiner is an avid duck hunter and is becoming a member of the Ducks Unlimited Cushing Chapter. He plans to attend college after graduation and pursue a career in mechanical engineering.
As he looks toward the future, Joiner remains thankful for the people who helped him reach this point. He credits his family, coaches and friends for their support, encouragement and motivation throughout his high school career and for helping shape the person he is today.
