Stroud senior Zane Abbey has built his final high school season on discipline, teamwork and a deep appreciation for the people who shaped him along the way.
Abbey, a varsity nose guard, credits his parents as his biggest influences. His father, David, instilled toughness and the importance of teamwork, while his mother, Dahna, taught him to encourage others and avoid quick judgment.
“My dad taught me how to be strong and work as part of a team,” Abbey said. “My mom has taught me to build others up and not judge too quickly.”
A 12th grader, Abbey balances athletics with academics, naming science as his favorite subject and Mr. Bailey as his favorite teacher. Outside the classroom, he is also active in powerlifting and contributes to his church through work nights and special events.
On the field, Abbey embraces the physical and mental demands of playing nose guard, a position that often puts him at the center of intense battles in the trenches.
“The most difficult thing is when I’m double teamed and trying to maneuver the center where I want him to go,” he said.
Despite the challenges, Abbey finds motivation in the bond he shares with his teammates.
“The camaraderie is what I enjoy most,” he said. “We stick together and help each other improve and grow. We’re more of a family than a team.”
That sense of unity is evident in both victories and defeats, where Abbey says the team celebrates together and lifts each other up during tough moments.
Among his favorite memories is a near game-changing play when he read a screen pass and almost came away with an interception. He has also witnessed unforgettable moments on the field, including a hit that sent an opposing player spinning midair.
Abbey’s journey in football has not been without its pauses, but teammate Kason Presley helped reignite his passion for the sport.
“He helped me find my love for football again after being away for a season,” Abbey said.
Before each game, Abbey centers himself by listening to Christian music and saying a prayer for the safety of both teams. Off the field, he enjoys working out, playing video games and spending time fishing at local ponds.
Through athletics, Abbey has developed lessons he plans to carry into the future.
“Discipline and not doubting myself,” he said. “Knowing that with hard work and determination, I can achieve my goals.”
As his senior year unfolds, Abbey continues to lead by example, driven by faith, family and a commitment to those around him.
