Entering his third season at the helm, head coach Matt Garner has reason to be optimistic about the direction of the Wellston Tigers. After finishing 14-10 a year ago, the Tigers return nearly their entire roster, losing just one senior. With a core group of experienced underclassmen now a year older and more confident, Wellston is positioned to take a meaningful step forward this season.
At the center of the Tigers’ lineup is Savanah Gaylord, a four-year starter at shortstop who has established herself as one of the program’s most reliable and dynamic players. Carrying a career .423 batting average with 80 hits, 53 RBIs, and 78 stolen bases, Gaylord impacts the game in every phase. Her ability to generate offense, combined with her steady defensive presence and leadership, sets the tone for the team. A three-sport athlete who also excels in basketball and track, Gaylord brings both athleticism and a competitive mindset that elevates those around her.
Another key contributor is Callie Matthews, who emerged as a breakout performer during her freshman season. Demonstrating versatility, Matthews saw time at multiple positions including the outfield, second base, and first base, where she eventually settled in late in the season. Her offensive production was impressive, posting a .499 batting average with four home runs, 16 RBIs, and 29 stolen bases. Matthews’ ability to consistently get on base and create scoring opportunities adds another dimension to Wellston’s lineup, while her .929 fielding percentage highlights her dependability in the field.
Brookelyn Terrell provides the kind of intangible value that every successful team needs. Known for her selfless attitude and commitment to her teammates, Terrell is deeply involved in all aspects of the program. Whether it is supporting teammates, putting in extra work, or contributing to team chemistry, she embodies the culture the Tigers are building. Her consistent effort and positive presence make her a cornerstone of the team’s identity.
With experience, leadership, and a strong returning core, Wellston enters the season with confidence and continuity. As younger players continue to develop and key contributors build on last year’s success, the Tigers have the pieces in place to improve on their record and compete at a higher level throughout the season.
