Cushing High School junior golfer Preston Jensen has built his game on consistency, calm and a quiet confidence that continues to grow with every round. A key contributor for the Tigers, Jensen is emerging as one of the program’s most reliable players and a competitor who embraces both the challenge and camaraderie that comes with high school golf.
Jensen, an 11th-grader, discovered early that golf fit his competitive personality and love for precision. Math is his favorite subject in school, and he lists Mrs. Puls as his favorite teacher, a nod to the detail-oriented mindset that also serves him well on the course. Away from golf, he relaxes by playing pickleball or video games, a balance that keeps the sport fun even as the stakes rise in tournament play.
When he reaches into his bag, Jensen’s go-to club is his 7-iron. He likes it because it is “not too long but not too short,” a reliable option he can trust in pressure situations. That dependability has helped him post some strong numbers, including a career-low round in the low 80s at Buffalo Rock, one of the tougher courses he has faced. His favorite place to tee it up is Oak Tree National, which he describes as a “very, very nice course and challenging,” the kind of layout that forces him to think through every shot.
Jensen says the best part of being on the Cushing golf team is “getting to play my favorite sport with my friends,” and that team-first mentality shows up in the way he approaches practice and competition. He has focused most on sharpening his irons and driver, knowing that improved ball striking off the tee and into greens will be the key to taking his scores into the 70s. Along the way, golf has taught him lessons that stretch far beyond a scorecard. He says the sport has shown him how to handle adversity: “Take your medicine and move on,” a simple mantra that applies on the course and in life.
Off the course, Jensen draws inspiration from home. He points to his dad as the person who inspires him most, saying, “My dad, he does so much for me.” In the broader golf world, he looks up to PGA Tour standout Viktor Hovland, calling him “a young and nice person,” and modeling his own demeanor after Hovland’s calm, respectful presence.
With a solid foundation, a growing skill set and a strong support system, Preston Jensen is poised to keep lowering his scores and leading Cushing golf to new heights.
