Under the bright Oklahoma lights, Ava Hebensperger plays with a quiet intensity that reflects more than just competition, it reflects purpose. The Cushing High School junior balances life as a two-sport athlete in softball and track, but her drive runs deeper than wins and losses.
“I’m motivated because God keeps waking me up, giving me another chance to play another game or show up to practice ready to get at it.”
That perspective shows up every time she steps on the field. Whether it’s a tight softball game or a long practice, Ava brings focus and resilience shaped by the people closest to her. Chief among them is her mom, who has faced adversity head-on and continues to be a steady example of strength.
“My mom motivates me to be strong-minded and composed.”
Ava’s love for the game is also fueled by the teammates around her, players who push her daily and create a bond that goes beyond the scoreboard. She points to teammates like Harli York, whose competitiveness sharpens her in practice, and Ellie Cooper, whose energy in the dugout lifts the entire team.
“They never fail to give up, we play all seven every single time.”
That relentless mindset has defined Ava’s biggest highlight: not a single play, but the collective fight of her team throughout the season. Even rivalry games, like facing Drumright, become something more meaningful, a chance to compete against friends who bring out the best in her.
Off the field, Ava stays just as committed. Balancing school and sports takes discipline, something she credits to staying fully present in each moment. Teachers like Dr. Sigle have also helped her navigate challenges and think about her future beyond high school.
“You just have to be all in.”
For Ava, wearing “Cushing” across her chest carries responsibility. She knows younger athletes are watching, and she embraces the chance to set an example.
“To show those little girls they can be in the same position and be just as good.”
And with every game, she’s doing exactly that.
