Cushing’s Gage Sharp – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by SLC Sports Complex

Cushing High School sophomore Gage Sharp may still be early in his varsity career, but the center fielder already carries himself like a veteran leader in the Tigers’ baseball program.

Sharp, a 10th-grader, patrols center field for Cushing and embraces both the physical and mental demands of one of the toughest spots on the diamond. “I play centerfield and the most challenging part is having to cover a lot of ground,” Sharp said. That responsibility suits his mindset, as he prides himself on his range in the outfield and his ability to read the ball off the bat.

The game has helped shape his approach far beyond the fence line. Sharp said athletics has already taught him one lesson that will stay with him long after high school. “It has taught me discipline,” he said. Whether it is getting to practice on time, staying locked in during drills or focusing on the little details, he understands that consistent habits lead to long-term success.

That foundation of discipline is rooted in his biggest role model at home. When asked who inspires him, Sharp did not hesitate. “My dad inspires me because he is just someone I have always looked up to,” he said. From work ethic to the way he carries himself, Sharp credits his father for setting the standard he tries to follow every day.

In the classroom, Sharp’s favorite subject is world history, and he points to Coach Douthit as his favorite teacher. Balancing academics and athletics is important to him and having a teacher-coach he respects helps tie both worlds together.

Around the team, Sharp brings a steady presence but also enjoys the personalities that keep the Tigers loose. He said teammate Beau Ladd is the most vocal voice in the locker room, while Jason Edwards “keeps us laughing.” “I enjoy getting to know the guys more and more each day,” Sharp said, noting that the daily grind of practices and games has helped the group grow closer.

Sharp also embraces the traditions of the sport. Asked about his favorite unwritten rule in baseball, he answered like a true purist: “Don’t step on the foul lines.” At the plate, he likes to hunt one specific pitch. His favorite offering to hit is “a middle to inside fastball,” a pitch he can turn on and drive.

Away from baseball, Sharp enjoys going bowling, a pastime that lets him compete in a different setting while still spending time with friends. Whether he is at the lanes or roaming center field, Sharp is focused on improving each day. “I love that everyone is also trying to get better each day,” he said of his teammates. That shared commitment is what he believes will push Cushing baseball forward this season and beyond.
