In the quiet of her backyard, Sage Pennington adjusts the net and begins her routine. Ball after ball makes a clean snap off the bat, landing just where it should.
No coaches. No teammates. Just determination. It’s beneath the Oklahoma sky, one swing at a time that Pennington is building the player she wants to become.
Now entering her sophomore year at Cushing High School, Pennington has already earned a reputation for her work ethic and team-first mindset. She’s played softball since T-ball and quickly embraced the challenges of high school competition.
“My freshman season went really well,” Pennington said. “I improved a lot—especially with fielding and hitting.”
An outfielder by preference, Pennington made the transition to high school smoothly, even while juggling a demanding academic load.
She takes honors and Advanced Placement classes, which offer more challenging coursework and, in the case of AP, the opportunity to earn college credit.
“It was definitely a bit of a struggle during slow-pitch season,” she said. “But I made it work with good time management.”
Along with school practices and travel ball, Pennington keeps herself sharp by training at home. Whether it’s hitting into a net or playing catch with friends, her goal is to keep growing.
“I try to soak up every piece of advice and keep working on my own,” she said.
Her motivation comes from her faith, family, and the people around her. “I’m a Christian, so my biggest role model is Jesus,” Pennington said. “But also my parents, grandma and coaches—they support me a lot.”
Looking ahead, she hopes to increase her batting average, earn more field time, and help her team push toward regionals and a shot at state.
“I just want every opportunity I can get,” she said. “And I’m going to work hard to stand out.”
