Cushing’s Romy Withiam – Presented by AFR Insurance

Romy Withiam is a senior at Cushing High School. She participates in softball, track, cross country, and band. The people in her life that got Romy into sports was her grandparents; introducing her to softball nine years ago. Since she’s been involved, Romy has won Fastpitch  Defensive Player of the Year 2023 and 2024, Fastpitch All District Class 4A 2023, and Fastpitch All Region Class 3A-4A 2024. Romy’s favorite part about softball is the defense. She loves pushing herself to get into the outfield to dive to make the hard catches. Her favorite sports moment was going to State with her team in her freshman year.

Romy’s biggest positive impact has been her coach, Coach York. “She encourages me to do the best that I possibly can each day,” Romy says. Her biggest role model is her mom. “She has always taught me to be kind and hard-working,” she says. In her free time, Romy likes to spend time with her family, practice her sports, and practice with her instruments. Her favorite subject in school is psychological science, because she enjoys learning about how the mind works. Her favorite teacher has been Mr. Stoney Matheson. Romy says “He taught me really well and made sure that I understood the material.” After high school, Romy plans to play softball at Connors State College while studying psychology and eventually working with the FBI.

Sports have taught Romy how to show up for herself and for her team. For her, to be a great athlete means to be responsible, hard-working, consistent, and to have grit. What motivates her when things get tough are her personal goals. God and focused persistence get her through to reaching everything that she’s set out for herself. Her advice to her fellow athletes is to not do anything by half. She says that even in failing, you’re getting closer to achievement.
