Q&A with Bristow’s Makynzi Spencer-Friday – Track Spotlight – Presented by Dowdy Insurance of Bristow

By: Hunter Ferguson

Bristow runner Makynzi Spencer-Friday spoke to VYPE in a recent interview.

VYPE: What are your personal goals for the year?

Make it to state and PR in the 100m and long jump. I’d also like to make it through the season without injury.

VYPE: What is your favorite athletic memory?

My freshman year, when I broke the school record with my 4×1 relay, and my sophomore year, when I placed on the podium at state against several great runners.

VYPE: What teammate has left the biggest impression on you and why?

The teammate who left the biggest impression on me was Rori Kelly. During my freshman year, Rori and I became close, and she showed me that having a good attitude and being positive can make all the difference in winning and losing. She’s also helped me learn not to get down on myself when I lose a race and instead get back out there and do my best.

VYPE: What is your favorite part of being on this team?

My favorite part about being on the team is how we are a family, and whenever someone else is competing, we go out and cheer as loud as we can for them.

VYPE: Do you participate in any community service projects?

I go to social services every Thursday with my leadership class to help with my community.

VYPE: What Clubs or Campus groups are you involved with and why?

I am in leadership, Leo club, and NHS.

VYPE: What has your sport taught you that you use in your daily life?

My sport has taught me to be positive, and even after I receive an outcome that I don’t like, go out and try again and trust that God has my back.

VYPE: What is the best advice that anyone has given you?

The best advice that I have received was that I just need to pray and let God handle it.

VYPE: Who inspires you and why?

My papaw inspires me because he has come and supported me in all my sports, and after games, he tells me what I need to fix and also tells me that I have potential, so I need to use it and be the best that I can be.

VYPE: Here is your chance to give a shoutout or say thank you to anyone you wish.

I’d like to thank both Coach Hall and Bobby for this opportunity. They’ve been with me since I was a freshman and have supported me and encouraged me.
